Vivaldi’s Other Legacy: His Female Music Students in Venice

In our winter lectures, conveniently presented in four Zoom sessions, Dr. Daniel Freeman will share the fascinating story of Vivaldi’s work at the Ospedale della Pietà, an orphanage in Venice for foundlings of various backgrounds. Soon after being engaged there in 1703, Vivaldi became the most revered master within the institution’s extensive music program for girls and young women. And it was for these young female performers that he produced many of the superb sacred works, vocal and instrumental, that are a large part of his legacy, including his unforgettable Gloria and Stabat Mater. The Ospedale’s public concerts attracted tourists and patrons from across Europe, who were astounded by the quality of the music-making and the novelty of seeing complex, sophisticated works brought to life entirely by girls and young women. Listen to the musical examples provided during these classes – in the live Zoom sessions or via recordings you can hear at your leisure – and you’ll share their amazement!
